What is Barbaric Castle?
It's a live-chat based room that can be accessed on IRC (internet Relay Chat) on the irc.darkmyst.org network. You can join it either with the mIRC freeware, a Java applet or mobile applications like Colloquy. The main room is listed as #Barbaric-Castle, and you're also required to join #BC-OOC for all out-of-character related matters.
Barbaric-Castle is a non-fantasy, free-form roleplay room. Non-fantasy means that there are no elves, dragons, orcs or the like; no mages or other beings possessing any kind of supernatural powers. All sentient characters are human or real animals. (A human may talk to an animal as if it was a friend, but the animal cannot answer.) The only magic allowed is the one perceived in the context of realistic historical perception (e.g. accusations of witchcraft, superstitions, phenomena regarded as supernatural for lack of understanding). A seer or druid, for example, would be all right in respect to what they would have been like in ancient times.
The game is set in the Northern Highlands of what is now Scotland, in the 8th Century, an era when the population consisted mostly in a cocktail of Picts, Scots, Angles, Britons, Vikings who had initiated their first raids in 793 AD, and the new conquerors of England which were the Normans. Drust's stronghold and surrounding lands had been among the smaller kingdoms that were later integrated into Scotland. But at the time of our story the fierce ruler of these savage lands is intent on submitting the locals to his will as well as to expand his influence and power.
This basic history is all you need to know to get started playing, but you can always learn more from a Google search. The setting is loose and allows for a comfortable creative license, but if you know and enjoy history and wish to exploit that knowledge, then you are most welcome to do so. BC involves all kinds of people: Barbarian warriors and castle residents, villagers, crofters, foresters and outlaws, beggars, bards, traveling nobles, Christian pilgrims or friars, merchants, artisans such as blacksmiths, fishermen, shepherds, mercenaries (knights don't exist yet, but if it is what you had in mind, you could still base your mounted warrior character on the embryo of a future code of chivalry), servants, prisoners, etc.
Remember, as you pick your character, that you want someone who will be able to interact with other characters. For example, fisherman will most likely get bored sitting out in his skiff all day.
Before joining the live-chat and participating in forum RP, please submit a character sheet here , using this template . Once approved, your character sheet will automatically be moved in "Meet the Characters". An admin will then contact you by PM for further information and/or any needed modifications.
Please note that no user under the age of 13 (IC/OOC) will be allowed to join.
In tribute to our original founder
The original concept of this FFRP has been created by Tusk and is being respectfully revived by a small group of nostalgic players with a few modifications. It's set in a later time period than the original and features new characters, so it doesn't affect Tusk's concept, stories, characters, or past users in any way or form.
